While the Santos chronograph draws a lot of attention for its extra mechanical complexity, this "invisible" black variant of the three-handed Santos de Cartier "Grande" watch is a fashion stunner. Case

This new Cartier Santos black replica isn't the first time Santos has gone black. Back in 2016, there was the "Black Santos" (Cartier Santos 100 Carbon watch) intimate contact. Today, the "carbon" in the watch's name could imply that the case is made of carbon. Instead, the carbon is used as a reference to the coating Cartier uses on the steel, a form of DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) called aDLC. The black 2020 Santos aDLC watch replica has a 39.8 mm wide square case, a thickness of 9.38 mm and water resistance to 100 meters.

Again, black ADLC has been used on this Cartier Santos two- tone steel and black aDLC watch replica but is limited to the bezel. The vertical brush finish is applied to the bezel and the case for a smooth, matte surface. The crown is also set with a black synthetic spinel but the big difference between his model and the all-black reference above is the tonality of the dial. Whereas the above reference is jet black, the dial here is a dark grey colour and has been decorated with two different finishes. The interior of the dial, the area inside the railway track, is vertically brushed, just like the case. Of course, this is not an “all-black” watch in the sense that the dial elements are also black. Unlike the sporty red seconds hand on the previous generation Santos 100 Carbon, the monochromatic personality of this black Santos is a bit more hip and modern by today’s standards. Giving the watch a bit of the ol’ Cartier pizazz, the case and rubber strap screws are in polished steel. The effect is to have them catch the light a bit, which draws the eyes better to the watch. Thus, you have the look of a stealth watch, even though this Santos very much calls attention to itself. In the crown is a black-colored spinel cabochon.

Strap

Attached to the case via Cartier’s easy-adjust (QuickSwitch) strap-changing system is a case-fitted matte-black alligator strap in addition to the pictured black rubber strap (that is quite comfortable on the folding deployant clasp). Inside the watch is the in-house-made caliber 1847 MC automatic movement, broadly used within the brand, that operates at 4Hz and has about two days of power reserve.

Aside from a healthy portion of classy, masculine sex appeal, the copy Cartier Santos watch in black aDLC is a simply new flavor of the still-novel contemporary family of Cartier Santos watches. What I think would have really completed the look was the availability of a black aDLC steel bracelet. What prevents this from happening is the higher cost of doing the aDLC coating properly on all the steel parts and not having the color wear off over time. That is tricky and would make this already arguably expensive timepiece cost even more money. For example, the Cartier Santos in natural steel on the bracelet costs $700 less than this version with a coated case on a strap.

Movement

Originally introduced inside the 2015 Cartier Clé collection, this automatic movement provides hours, minutes, seconds and date functionality. Calibre 1847 MC is Cartier’s modern workhorse and incorporates nickel phosphorous components and a soft-iron cage to protect it from magnetism. Beating at a modern 4Hz frequency, the movement offers a power reserve of 42 hours. It has to be seen as Cartier’s alternative to third-party movements such as ETA and Sellita.
